News was received in Maspeth during the past few days, that before long, Jews of the section will have a new center, similar to one recently dedicated in Astoria. The announcement became public when Justice Callaghan was asked to approve the consolidation of two Jewish congregations in Maspeth.
Jacob Leiman, a lawyer of the community, made the application on behalf of the Congregation Chav Scholem Anshel Maspeth, and the Maspeth Talmud Torah. Justice Callaghan signed the application permitting the union.
According to the application papers, the purpose of the consolidation is to found a Maspeth Jewish Center, The new body will operate a synagogue, a Hebrew school and a social center. The building to be used by the new center is now under construction at 11 Grand Street, Maspeth. It is expected it will be ready for dedication next month.
Although a rabbi has not been appointed to head the new organization as yet, the following officers have been named in the papers submitted to the court: president, Jacob Beyer; vice president, Samuel Grift; secretary, Jacob Leiman and treasurer, Nathan Epstein.
Mr. Leiman, commenting on the union said in part, “The center gives the Jews of Maspeth a central meeting place which has been much needed. The religious facilities there have been wholly inadequate. There has been no place for social activities, no center, no Hebrew school, The new building, and organization will provide all of these.
