In mid-December, the Gaming Facilities Locations Board approved full licenses for three casinos, two of them in Queens and one in the Bronx. The Bronx and one of the Queens projects alienate parkland with no replacement land required. The Bronx project is at the Bally’s golf course just over the Whitestone Bridge which is part of Ferry Point Park. The Queens projects are at Resorts World in Ozone Park and at CitiField, which is part of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. The casinos are within 10 miles of each other. Do we really need this much gambling this close together? Besides the loss of parkland and the traffic mess these facilities will no doubt cause, they usually serve as crime magnets and in many cases lead to gambling addiction.
