Years ago, sanitation trucks carried brooms and a shovel. Not only would they clean my corne sewer, they would clean up anything that spilled from the pails or truck. We usually swept our sewer for drainage, especially during storms. Nobody cares anymore. It's easier to complain.

My Grandfather worked for the Sanitation department. When he came to this country. His job was a "Street Sweeper" and all done by hand. He was proud to have a job that supported his family.

plant more trees

We also need more rain gardens to absorb excess rainwater. We should have them on every block.

Combination of corrupt and lazy city employees.

Been saying that all along - if the ‘catch basins’ were cleaned more often, this problem would not occur. The late Assemblyman John Flack who represented the area for years always wrote letters. These days our Elected either don’t care or know how to get action. Rain wasn’t just invented. Clean the ‘catch basins’ and put a screen over them to curtail the garbage. Sanitation could monitor the screens on their route. Keep in mind, years ago we had real street cleaners. These days, we have mechanical sweepers that go 70mph in the middle of the street blowing dust! NYC DEP must clean the sewers and taxpayers are entitled for services they pay for and deserve.

I thought it was all climate change.

In some areas, yes. We clear our own catch drains, but it still floods out.

Smaller storm drains slots. WAY more pigs littering & dumping. Maintenance under the storm drain grates is NO longer done.

A lot of people are nasty throwing their garbage all over the place. But don't see a lot of street cleaning nowadays. All I keep hearing from sanitation department is buying new cans but nothing about them going around and doing street cleaning. The sewers also haven't been properly maintained. Mayor after mayor only worry about their pet projects but fail to take care of the infrastructure and basic need like street cleaning.

It also people who don't sweep the curb in front of their homes. Rain washes the trash, leaves down to the corner catch basins. The other day, walking up an inclined street, a guy washing his car from an open hydrant- water gushing down the street along the curb taking everything with it toward the sewer. Friend lives on a corner with a catch basin is constantly picking up the crap on top of it.

Imagine if our high taxes and thousands of municipal workers were used to do this.

WHY is the city not doing this?!!

Make illegals clean that out if they want to stay here.

Fine residents for not cleaning public property???? Seriously???? This is what our tax dollars are supposed to go for! NOT FREE BRIADWAY TICKETS FOR KUDS OR AIR CONDITIONERS FOR OEOPLE IN PUBLIC HOUSING!!! Yes I ckean the street in front of ny house and shovel the ealk. But on a corner house with more property and higher taxes the city should make DAMN sure thise sewers are clear and IF NOT the homeowner should NEVER be fined! You wanna get unemployment down? You wanna get the homeless off the street and on their feet? Create these jobs! POLITICIANS NEED TO DO THEIR JOBS. STOP FINING US HARD WORKING TAX PAYERS!!!
