The New York Times: July 6, 1923– As the casket containing the body of his mother was being lowered into a grave at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Maspeth, Queens, yesterday, Joseph Handleman, 38, of 66 East Fourth Street, Manhattan, dropped dead.

He was standing alongside the grave as the coffin was being lowered and probably would have fallen into the excavation had not his wife and two children caught him. He was dead when an ambulance surgeon arrived from Wyckoff Heights Hospital. Physicians declared that death was due to heart trouble.
