(NY Times – Maspeth, L.I. October 7, 1927) Just as the body of the late Thomas Evans of Jamaica was being lowered into a grave at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Maspeth, twenty-five hooded and masked members of the Ku Klux Klan drove up in four automobiles. There was a short ritual and then a Klansman placed a wreath on the covered grave. At a signal the Klansmen returned to their cars and drove toward a wooded spot nearby.
Relatives and friends were surprised to see the white-robed visitors and said they had never believed Evans was a member of the order.
At the Queens County offices of the Ku Klux Klan it was learned that Evans was a member of Emmett D. Smith Klan, No 38.
