(Maspeth, NY: October 15, 1962) A 15-year-old Queens boy who calls himself a Nazi “storm troop” leader has been arrested as the vandal who overturned 200 tombstones at the Mount Zion Jewish Cemetery in Maspeth, Queens, last month.
Detectives of the Maspeth station said the youngster admitted the damage after being traced through two boys who said he had beaten them up a few months ago for refusing to join his troop. The police had carried out nightly watches in the 78-acre cemetery, spending hours there in the rain because it was in rain that the vandalism had occurred.
Lieut. Frank Rice and Detectives John Plansker, Joseph Tracey and Marvin Rogoff made the arrest for juvenile delinquency Saturday night. They said they found the sign “Storm Troop Headquarters” in the garage at the boy’s home in Woodside, along with a swastika flag and arm bands, German Army helmets, pictures of Adolf Hitler and Adolf Eichmann and the clippings about Nazi death camps.”
