As I sit listening to Christmas music my mind begins to wander to Christmas past, to family, friends, the old neighborhood, where I grew up, Corona, Queens, New York City, Mama, and my brothers too. A profound feeling of void overtakes me: an emptiness, a longing for past, what can never be, as family, friends, and familiarity have long since passed on, never to be resumed.
In my old age, I, Vincent Joseph Tomeo, realize how much is lost, how must is gained, and given. No regrets. I just wish I could taste the deliciousness of times passed and savor the taste of yesterday for today.
Christmas is a time of joyful family giving and celebration of the birth of the Prince of Peace. What a magnificent concept to live by. I feel cheerful and happy. I have had a wonderful life. This act will merit a standing ovation, an encore, too.
I walked on the stage. The curtain opens. No one is there but time, space, and God.
So, I will seek out an audience in need. I will make the concept of Christmas come alive. Give to the USO for the children who lost a parent or parents in defense of our nation.
I want to see the children smile, giggle, in sweet joy, and merriment. Isn’t that what Christmas is all about?
Merry Christmas, Peace On Earth!
