On October 7, Community Board 5 hosted a hearing at Christ the King Auditorium that quickly descended into chaos. The embarrassing spectacle was broadcast live and remains viewable on YouTube. The Department of Homeless Services and Westhab, the proposed shelter provider, had reps on hand to answer questions, but they were short on answers and members of the audience both for and against the shelter misbehaved by calling out and shouting speakers down. Out of a list of 80 people who signed up to testify, only 9 got a chance to speak their minds before the hearing was closed by Chairman Vincent Arcuri. Some of the comments were inflammatory and met with condemnation from Mayor de Blasio and others. Most who attended felt that the entire exercise was a waste of time. It was.
