There are more than 550,000 lead pipes statewide that, due to a Biden administration mandate, must be replaced by 2037. Other municipalities are conducting the work themselves, but outside of a few areas that NYC deems to be high risk, the responsibility currently falls on the individual homeowner. This requires coordination with the City as it is responsible for the connection from the property line to the main. The sewer line insurance will only cover the cost of the replacement if the line breaks, not just because it’s made of lead. This costs homeowners a pretty penny. The City needs to take charge of this project and complete it if it actually wants to get the lead out.
