Greetings to all members of the Juniper Park Civic Association! We hope everyone has been well and healthy.
Throughout the 104th Precinct, we have had a decrease of overall crime by 6.5% for the year-to-date period and an increase of 6% for the 28-day period. To speak on Middle Village, more specifically, we have seen no change for the year to date, as we have the same number of crimes reported for the year thus far. Moving over to Maspeth we have seen an overall decrease in crime of 11.2% for the year-to-date period. The reduction in crime is a testament to the incredible work that the 104th Precinct Officers do day in and day out.
We would like to make you aware of a recent JEWELRY SCAM we have seen throughout the 104th Precinct and Queens. Be aware if you are approached by a stranger complimenting your jewelry or asking to bless your jewelry, be aware it is a SCAM. Strangers will approach you and speak about your jewelry, ask to give you a hug and with the slightest of hand and distraction techniques, remove your watch, necklace, bracelet, or any other jewelry you might be wearing. Please be aware of these recent crimes and wear your jewelry covered or tucked in.
Did you know there is a safe way to make an online transaction when buying and selling items? Every Precinct is under 24-hr surveillance and is a designated E-Commerce Exchange Zone. No appointment is required.
With the holidays approaching, please monitor all your bank accounts as there are many transactions that take place during the holidays, please check to make sure you are not a victim of theft. We urge everyone to use the holiday season as a calendar reminder to check your security cameras to make sure they are in proper working order.
Please continue to monitor your online purchases and deliveries. If you know you are not going to be home throughout the time of delivery, please try to use a different address or maybe another location to have your packages delivered to prevent package theft. Utilizing a combination of the following tips can reduce the likelihood of thieves stealing your packages:
What You Can Do To Deter Package Theft
• Always track your shipment online.
• Choose a shipping option that requires a signature for delivery.
• Schedule packages to arrive when you are home or arrange to ship your packages to a location where a friend, relative, trusted neighbor, or building super can accept them on your behalf.
• Ship packages to place of employment.
• Request the delivery service hold your package for pick-up at their facility.
• Utilize deliveries to retailer provided lockers or carrier provided alternate drop points where you can go to pick up your item.
• Utilize free services that track packages, redirect packages to convenient locations for pick-up, and request vacation holds.
• Some shipping companies utilize tracking services which can include features such as shipping status notifications and delivery scheduling.
• Consider installing Wi-Fi enabled cameras that provide alerts. Motion-sensor lighting.
• Package lockboxes.
• Report suspicious persons to the police.
