We don't mind when life is occasionally disrupted for a day of filming. But the HBO series “The Deuce” did something pretty dumb, not to mention inconsiderate, on May 4th. They were filming a graveside scene inside Mount Olivet Cemetery, but reserved 6 blocks of parking for their vehicles along commercial areas of Grand Avenue, Flushing Avenue and 66th Street. Mount Olivet consists of 71 acres of private property which surely could have accommodated the parking needs of the crew. Instead, small businesses had parking taken away from their customers and were negatively affected. And this is an area that scouts seem to gravitate toward frequently, with several shootings happening along this stretch each year. When the Mayor's Office was asked why this was allowed, the response was, “Is there an area BID we can get in touch with?” Maspeth does not have a Business Improvement District and throwing a few bucks toward it would not help the mom-and-pop shops who lose a day's profits.
