The dilapidated bridge over the LIRR at Metropolitan Ave and Fresh Pond Road was in the news again. The Daily News recently reported that Community Board 5 is concerned that repair work on the bridge would remove the tracks below that were formerly used for passenger transport. CB5 mentioned the possibility that the rail line could be reactivated to provide future service to the increasing population of the area. As the Montauk branch terminates at Long Island City and does not go to Manhattan, this scenario is not very likely. When the actual repairs will happen is anyone’s guess, since the project has been repeatedly delayed over the course of many years, as reported in the March 2014 edition of the Juniper Berry.
