A huge painting, entitled “Somos La Luz,” is now on display in the parking lot near Queens Museum and Queens Theatre in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
Created by Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada, a Cuban-American who specializes in large public art, the more than 20,000-square-foot ground mural depicts Queens doctor Dr. Ydelfonso Decoo in a light blue face mask, head covering, and protective vest. Dr. Decoo died from COVID while treating patients. The image provides a spot to mourn the victims of this lethal disease while also putting a face on the frontline workers who are fighting it.
It lies about 20 blocks from Elmhurst Hospital Center, a 545-bed public hospital that has been profoundly affected by the COVID-19 crisis.
