Juan Liz converted the former Baha Lounge into Don Tequila Mexican Cantina last autumn and the result is remarkable. Great food, friendly service and fun décor await you inside the doors at 83-38 Woodhaven Blvd (near Myrtle Ave) in Glendale.

At the very end of April, I stopped by the restaurant with my husband, Steve, after a visit to Forest Park. It was that time between late lunch and early dinner, so we had the place pretty much to ourselves.

The staff was very attentive and aimed to please. We seated ourselves in one of the booths that line the wall and took in the view of the eclectic artwork and artifacts on display. The manager approached us and suggested a classic margarita, which I ordered, along with a Diet Coke for my husband, who was driving. We then had a friendly chat with Juan about our mutual love for the Yankees before he told us the story of his restaurant's soft opening in late 2017 and the “magic mirror” on the wall.

Fresh guacamole was prepared for us right at our table and the chips had come straight out of the oven. Steve ordered Tacos del Pastor: Pineapple marinated shredded pork, topped with red onions, cilantro, roasted pineapple chunks & salsa de arbol. I ordered a Wild Mushroom and Spinach Quesadilla, filled with a blend of Chihuahua, Oaxaca and Manchego cheese. The presentation was neat, and the food was delicious.

We did not have room for dessert but their selection, including chocolate lava souffle and guava flan, sounded intriguing.

Appetizers range from $6-$12, soups and salads are $5-$9, entrees are $14-$29, and desserts are $7. Happy hour happens weekdays from 3-7pm and there is a $22.95/person brunch Sundays from noon until 3pm which includes 2 cocktails (Mimosa, Sangria, Tequila Sunrise, Bloody Mary, Frozen Margarita) and $20.00 Sangria pitchers. Ladies' Night is Thursday. A DJ starts performing at 5pm and from 3-8pm, they serve $5 margaritas and sangria.

Valet parking is available during evening hours Thurs-Sun.

We happened to pass by on Cinco de Mayo and the place was absolutely hopping! Don Tequila seems like a great place to host a party and is a welcome addition to the area.
