This traffic control box near 69th Place along the westbound LIE service road had been tagged with graffiti this summer and this problem was reported to 311. The unfortunate response that was received: “Your Service Request was closed. The Department of Transportation inspected the condition you reported and determined that this issue is not within its jurisdiction. Graffiti removal from buildings falls under the Department of Sanitation jurisdiction.” This location obviously is not a building. We have to wonder whether or not the location was even inspected by DOT. After further inquiry, we received a response from the City DOT that this box belonged to the State DOT and we were assured that the graffiti would be taken care of by that agency. However, after almost 4 weeks, the graffiti remained. JPCA board member Len Santoro took matters into his own hands and painted the box on September 20th.
