Transfiguration church has been serving the Maspeth community for over 100 years.
Two years ago, representatives had prepared a proposal to have the church designated as one of the many historical sites within the United States that would have permitted the Parish to apply for grants to make repairs to the exterior building. This is not a landmark designation. Upon information and belief this application can still be processed and approved. The proposal was presented via the Newtown Historical Society. It was also alleged there are other Catholic and non-Catholic churches on record having this designation. What did the church do regarding this critical resource?
As noted in the announcement, there is a reference of the sale of the church and property. This is a residential area, and potential transactions can have major negative impacts on the community.
Transfiguration church prior to the merger is alleged to have been financially sound and was understood to have sound support from its parishioners. So, what happened? What changes were made? Why did parishioners leave?
I respectfully ask that all recourse be taken to learn what occurred. IF actions were taken that had adverse effects, that they be corrected. That the Diocese of Brooklyn Queens, the Lithuanian Apostolate, Elected Officials, community organizations, religious groups, residents, and the business community step forward to protect a true treasure and major piece of history. The architecture if lost can never be replaced. Transfiguration Church is a treasure to the Maspeth Community, Borough of Queens, State of New York, and the United States.
Kindly support God and Country.
