NY Times March 25, 1943 • Fireman, George Schmitt, 30 years old, of 246 Sumpter Street, Brooklyn, was fatally injured yesterday afternoon when a hook and ladder truck on which he was riding struck the rear of a surface car at Metropolitan Avenue and Sixty-fifth Street, Middle Village, Queens. He died in the Wyckoff Heights Hospital three hours later.

Another fireman, George McCabe, 31, of 72-21 Sixty-seventh Street, Glendale and a passenger on the car, Patrolman Charles Reilly of 72-25 Sixty-sixty Drive, Middle Village, were slightly injured. The fire truck, returning from a grass fire in the Long Island Railroad yards at Sixty-ninth Street and Metropolitan Avenue, struck the surface car, which was stationary, as it attempted to pass to the left.
