The CSX property on 57 Ave where it goes under the LIE has been a haven for youths and the homeless for many years. The trash just kept building up over the years and attempts to have CSX do a cleanup proved fruitless. We reached out to Assemblyman Barnwell and he joined in our effort and lo and behold an eyesore has been remedied. Two workers spent a week removing a massive amount of trash. They filled a large dumpster and made a large pile along the tracks for the garbage train. Then they repaired holes in the fence and erected signs warning people not to trespass. We don’t know if CSX has any plans to continue their cleanup efforts. There certainly are other areas, we suggested Eliot Ave, Caldwell Ave and Grand Ave. The conditions of the railroad property are no fault of CSX. It is the inconsiderate dumpers who don’t care about their community but it is the responsibility of the railroad to maintain their property if they want to be good neighbors. We thank them again for a job well done. – Richard Polgar
