We have some sad news to report: The Janta House, located at 88-28 43rd Ave in Elmhurst, the home of Polish expatriates and WWII heroes Walentyna and Aleksander Janta-Połczyńska, who had previously been profiled in the Berry, was demolished in May. The Landmarks Preservation Commission declined to take action to protect it despite widespread community support for official landmark designation. The Elmhurst History and Cemeteries Preservation Society led a good fight, but ultimately lost the battle. It’s another unfortunate casualty in a long line of historic Queens properties that have been ignored by the LPC.
