Congress Member Joe Crowley, cousin of former council member, Elizabeth Crowley, surely must have thought that he’d breeze to re-election this year. What he didn’t count on was a very tenacious newcomer, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, giving him a run for his money. Although he vastly out-fundraised and outspent her, she totally trounced him in the June 26th Democratic Congressional primary. Crowley did graciously concede that night, dedicating his version of the Bruce Springsteen classic “Born to Run” to his opponent. However, he has refused to remove himself from the ballot, and will appear on the Working Families Party line this November. He has also stated that he plans to continue on as a political powerbroker here in Queens rather than relocating his politics to Virginia, where he and his family actually reside.
