On Friday, October 23rd, a “water main break” was reported at Reeder Street and Queens Blvd in Elmhurst. This was not a typical rupture, as it was actually caused by a construction crew working on a large development at the former site of Wendy's fast food restaurant. Millions of gallons of water spilled out, leading to a large stretch of Queens Blvd and the subway lines running beneath it to be shut down, several people were evacuated from neighboring buildings and lots of monetary damage was caused to homes and businesses. The developer is now on the hook for the cost of the cleanup as well as settling with those directly affected by the incident. What was really dumb about this incident is that a partial stop work order was in place at the time and the work likely was not authorized.
