In honor of National Thank a Police Officer Day, Newtown Historical Society and Juniper Park Civic Association hosted a memorial service for two fallen officers at All Faiths Cemetery on September 19. The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 32 attended along with representatives of the NYPD, Police Benevolent Association, poet Vincent Tomeo and members of the community. Wreaths were placed at the 9/11 memorial at the entrance to the cemetery as well as at the graves of Patrolman Henry Meyer of the 104th Precinct who died in an off duty shooting in 1927 and Detective Rodney Andrews who died with his partner in a buy and bust operation in Staten Island in 2003. Andrews’ widow, Mary Anne, herself a police officer, offered words of remembrance. Vincent Tomeo read poetry at each stop along the procession. Flowers were donated by Enchanted Florist and refreshments were sponsored by Queensboro UNICO. A special thank you to Brian Chevanne, superintendent of All Faiths and Anthony Pisciotta, who volunteered to beautify the gravesites prior to the event.
