DOT revealed plans to install a traffic light at the corner of 79th Street and Juniper Blvd South. When Council Member Holden asked why, noting that there is a traffic light on the next corner, the DOT responded that the principal of PS49 requested it because 100+ students cross there to get to the park after school. However, when asked, the principal said he knew nothing about this, and while there are a few kids that cross there, the school can direct them to cross at 80th Street. DOT then claimed that a community resident requested it, which is interesting, because even after going through the community board, many civic groups have not received requested stop signs and traffic lights. Traffic lights near parks and schools tend to be dangerous as drivers race to get through them before they change.
