In January, during the board meeting of Animal Care and Control, it was announced that the Bronx would be getting a full-service animal shelter, something it currently lacks. In addition, the ACC intake center in Rego Park will be moving to a larger space in an undisclosed location in Middle Village. The ACC is still looking for a site to build a full-service animal shelter in Queens. Intake centers receive animals but do not adopt them out. Animals surrendered in Queens are transported to either Manhattan or Brooklyn for treatment and eventual adoption. Funding for the building of both of the proposed full-service shelters was allocated by Mayor de Blasio in 2016.
