The “Stop Loud and Excessive Exhaust Pollution” Act will take effect in April. AKA the SLEEP Act, the law raises fines from $150 to $1000 for illegal modifications to cars and motorcycles that make them louder. The law applies to both vehicle owners and repair shops that install the parts. There is a “3 strikes, you’re out” policy for the retailers. Additionally, DEP is conducting a pilot program to automatically ticket drivers of vehicles that violate the noise code via sound meters and street cameras which capture an image of the vehicle’s license plate. DEP then sends a notice to the registered owner of the vehicle to present the vehicle for inspection. Unfortunately, neither of these undertakings target cars that blast music, but they’re a good start to getting the noise under control.
