Did you get your Con Ed bill in February and almost faint from shock? Yes, the bills doubled, and in some cases, tripled. It didn’t make much sense, and many expressed their frustrations. It turns out that the closure of the Indian Point nuclear power plant by former Governor Andrew Cuomo was one of the direct causes of this. Attempting to prove his green pedigree, the former governor decided unexpectedly to close the plant down 14 years before it was required to go off line. This resulted in a reduction of 2000 megawatts, roughly 25% of New York City’s supply. Shifting away from nuclear power means that more natural gas is burned in the creation of electricity – in direct opposition to the green agenda. And that cost was passed on to the consumers. Both expensive and dumb.
