The New York City Council voted themselves a 32% pay raise on February 5th. This will boost their current $112,500 salary to $148,500. The pay raise legislation limits the council members’ outside income and eliminates the bonuses that most members receive for chairing committees, measures which are considered “reforms”. Polls indicate that the majority of NYC believes that the council members were already paid too much before the vote, and we don’t know of any other profession where an employee can elect to give themselves a raise.
