Every ten years, based on census figures, the district lines for all elective offices are redrawn. Although the electorate voted for an independent redistricting process, the commission set up for this purpose could not come to an agreement on the lines. That meant the responsibility then fell on the state legislature, where Democrats have a supermajority. Congressional lines are pretty much the same. But lines have shifted quite a bit from where they were for state senate and assembly districts. If you were in Brian Barnwell’s district, you may now be in Cathy Nolan’s, Catalina Cruz’s or Andy Hevesi’s, depending on where you reside. If you were in Joe Addabbo’s district, you may now be in the new District 17, an open seat which includes Greenpoint, LIC, Sunnyside, Maspeth, Ridgewood, Glendale, and Woodhaven. Look at the maps to get an idea of how your representation may change. The June primaries will be based on the new district lines. The next undertaking will be to redraw the lines for next year’s city council races.
