Starting August 1st, 2023, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) in partnership with the Department of Education (DOE) began the process of temporarily relocating Engine Company 287/Ladder Company 136/Battalion 46 (E287/L136/B46). The fire station is currently located at 86-53 Grand Avenue and will be temporarily relocated to the Newtown High School Athletic Field Tennis Courts located at 90-26 58th Avenue. This relocation is necessary to facilitate the demolition and rebuild of E287/L136/ B46’s current quarters as the structural condition of this 109-year-old fire station was negatively impacted by improper construction activities conducted on adjacent properties. From August to November 2023, the Fire Department will begin occupying space at the tennis courts in the Newtown Athletic Field and begin necessary site work to relocate the companies, equipment, and our first responders. By the begin- ning of December, the site work should be completed and the members of the Fire Department will move in until the end of 2026. There will be no interruption in emergency and medical service. The FDNY is using two of the three tennis courts and have converted the adjacent volleyball court into a multi-purpose court which will be available for recreational use. Upon completion of the relocation, all utilized spaces will be restored and new lights and water fountains will be installed by the Fire Department.
