It seems like anything goes in this city lately, and illegal vending is part of that. You can see street hawkers on Canal and 14th Streets in Manhattan openly selling junk and shoplifted items. But here in Queens, the illegal vending is mostly food. There are food handling requirements for those selling food legally, but anyone can cut up a mango and sell it by the side of the road and no one does a thing about it. The straw that broke the camel’s back in our area: entire stands being set up that compete with local businesses that pay taxes and are subject to inspection. Two such stands were dismantled by DSNY and NYPD. One was outside Principe Park and the other at the corner of Woodhaven and Queens Blvds.
