On Thanksgiving morning, a vehicle used as a taxi fell into a giant 8-by-10-foot sinkhole in front of 52-31 70th Street in Maspeth. Thankfully, the vehicle was unoccupied at the time and no injuries resulted. FDNY needed a crane to lift the vehicle from the hole. NYPD secured the scene and gas and water were turned off while National Grid and DEP made sure no damage was done to underground utilities. It likely did not make for a happy Thanksgiving for several families. DDC is currently investigating whether sewer construction tunneling might have been responsible for the collapse.
