After a delayed opening, public schools in NYC, where it was feared that COVID would rapidly spread, turned out to not be dangerous places at all. The rate of spread in schools was in fact much lower than it was in the general population. But since a deal was made with the UFT, the schools were closed when the infection rate in NYC reached 3%. This was devastating to parents, who had to arrange childcare, as well as the kids and teachers, who accomplish more via in person learning. As we go to press, the schools remain closed, although Mayor de Blasio announced that grammar schools would reopen December 7th with stricter COVID-19 testing requirements, but middle and high schools would continue online learning. This insanity needs to stop for the sake of all involved.
