You may recall that last year a speeding freight train hit a truck crossing the tracks at Maspeth Avenue after the warning signals malfunctioned. In response, this past December, the railroad decided to post “stop signs” in the Maspeth Railyard. Now trains are expected to make a full stop as they pass through. These same signs have also been installed at the 88th Street crossing in Glendale.
This was their solution, instead of repairing the signals, which truckers and local residents report have been defective for years.
